If you’re planning to visit Angel’s Billabong in Nusa Penida, there’s a few things you should know before going.
The tourist favourite is known for its natural infinity pool framed by rock cliffs and an ocean view. However, what isn’t widely known is that the iconic spot has caused injury and even sadly claimed the lives of holiday goers.
When the tide is low, it’s extremely tempting to take a stunning photo to post on your social media. But a recent video has gone viral online and acted as a friendly reminder to always be vigilant. The clip showing unsuspecting tourists frantically dashing to escape crashing waves.
It’s not the first time that Angel’s Billabong has made headlines. Back in 2018, a 46-year-old Chinese national drowned as he was swept out to sea while taking a selfie. Even before that, a New Zealand tourist, Temson Mannie Junior Simeki, 23, also died in 2017 when he jumped in to save his girlfriend, who had been hit by a wave and dragged out.
Expert advice
The Australian government service Smartraveller has shared safety advice for those planning to swim when travelling to Indonesia to take warnings seriously and check local sources for information about potential dangers.
The website states:
“People have drowned in coastal areas, including in Bali, due to rough seas and strong currents.”
“Local beach rescue services may not be of the same standard as in Australia.”
