A clever mum from Brisbane has come up with the ultimate furniture hack using a humble Ikea basket.

Mother of two Michelle Rhodes used Ikea’s $39.99 Snidad basket to create a custom coffee table.

“I recently bought two rattan/timber chairs from Kmart and needed a small coffee table to match,” Michelle exclusively told Better Homes and Gardens.

“Unfortunately it’s quite difficult to find any rattan tables for under $100,” she explained.

It was then that Michelle decided to make her own coffee table - using the basket along with the top from an old Kmart side table.

“I started looking around my house for some inspiration and decided to use one of my baskets - an Ikea basket called Snidad because it had the look and size that I was after,” she said.

“I also used a side table that was sitting in storage unused and it was the perfect size and colour for the Ikea basket!”

To create the coffee table, Michele removed the handles from the basket using a pair of pliers.

“Next I removed some small screws in the base to make the surface even,” Michelle explained.

“Then I applied liquid nails to the base and attached the top.”

Michelle spent approximately $60 on her coffee table.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the end result and so many people ask me where I bought my little table!” she said.

The hack created a stir on the Kmart & Beyond Ideas Australia Facebook page.

“Now that’s a hack! Brilliant and so stylish,” said one woman.

“So clever and so simple. Love your work,” another added.

“This is one of the best hacks I’ve seen,” concluded another member of the group.
