As your baby’s due date draws nearer, it’s time to start thinking about their nursery. You’ll be spending a lot of time in this room, so it’s important to consider all the elements, including textiles, furniture, the colour palette and a theme.
Here, the team at Metro Baby share five top nursery decorating ideas to help you create a space that feels warm and welcoming.
1. Start with a colour palette
Your colour scheme will help guide other parts of the nursery decor, such as bedding, rugs, furniture and the theme – hence why you should make this decision first. Warm, gender-neutral tones like whites, creams, browns and greys are popular right now, allowing you to create a room that matches the aesthetic of your home and can easily be modified as your baby gets older. These natural hues also add a layer of warmth that feels peaceful and calm.
2. Choose a theme
Having selected your nursery colour palette, it’s now time to decide on a theme. Rather than going for the trusty farm, ballerinas or zoo animals, why not think a little outside the square? These days you’ll see bold monochromatics (one shade in various tones), elevated animal prints and line drawings taking nurseries to the next level. And if you decide to paint or add wallpaper, these looks can be easily translated into rooms for older kids or for different uses.
3. Find the right feeding chair
When you’re designing your nursery, you also need to think about function. You’ll spend a lot of time feeding in this room, so it’s important to invest in a comfortable feeding chair. Unlike regular chairs, nursing chairs are built with breastfeeding support for extra comfort. So, while they’re not absolutely necessary, they can quickly become your best friend. Plus, contemporary nursing chairs are incredibly versatile and can be repurposed well beyond your baby’s feeding years.
4. Layer textiles
Safety is always paramount when choosing textiles like bedding and blankets in the nursery. But these warming layers are also important for creating a cosy room for baby, Mum and Dad (especially during those late nights and early mornings). Try layering textiles, such as rugs and fabric mobiles, to make the room feel like one big hug. Drape a throw over your feeding chair to wrap around your shoulders on cold nights, and add some thick curtains to block out the light. These final touches will create a comfortable ambience conducive to sleep and calmness.
5. Add soft lighting
To finish off your nursery decor, soft lighting is a must. As a new mum, late nights will quickly become your new normal, and the right lighting will make things a little less challenging. A beautifully designed night light is perfect – not too bright to make bub think it’s time to party, but enough illumination to aid in nappy changes and rewrapping swaddles. Plus, a dim night light won’t be such a shock to your circadian rhythm, so you and Bub can get back to sleep quickly.
