Flower Power

Fresh-cut blooms are an instant pick-me-up for any room. Visit your local weekend market and stock up on flowers for the week to brighten up your home. Even better, invest in some houseplants and add greenery to unexpected locations such as the bathroom or kitchen for a luxe feel.

Remove all the clutter from tables, bench tops, sideboards and sinks. If you can’t find a home for every item, pop the excess into a storage box that can be hidden out of sight. However, if you’re entertaining guests, nothing looks lovelier than a table dressed for success. A complete dinner set laid out with linen napkins and a centre piece can do wonders for warming the atmosphere.

Create vignettes

Spend some time arranging the items you have on display on bookshelves, dressing tables and fireplace mantels, grouping items in attractive miniature scenes that set a mood or colour theme. A good rule of thumb is to collect items in uneven numbers, and ensure size and scale vary within the grouping. Try arranging a book, candle and jewellery dish in complementary colours together to the side of a dressing table, or a selection of books with eye-catching covers on your coffee table.

Finishing touches

Cushions and throws are an easy, inexpensive way to update your home. Look for throw cushions in different textures such as velvet, linen, wool or with embellishments, and keep the colour selection to a simple palette of neutral shades. Throws are a great way to add warmth, and can be slung over chairs, sofas and the end of beds.
