Patterned rugs can be pricey. Get a similar look for less with our DIY painted rug project. Liquid fabric dye applied with a foam brush adds high-end dimension and color to a plain wool rug. We used black dye for a chic, modern look, but opt for the color that best complements your space.
What You Need
- Flokati wool rug
- Drop cloth
- Painter’s tape
- Tape measure
- Liquid fabric dye
- Foam brush
- Dye setter
Step 1: Prep the Rug
Set up a large drop cloth outside or in a protected, well-ventilated area. Lay the rug flat on the cloth, smoothing out any lines or wrinkles as best you can. To keep rug taut, secure in place with painter’s tape.
Step 2: Place the Lines
Stretch a tape measure over the rug to guide the lines. We went for a criss-cross diamond pattern, but you can also lay out a grid, striped, or abstract pattern. Dot black dye onto the rug fibers using the thin edge of a foam brush. The color will bleed a bit between dots, making your lines.
Step 3: Set and Spray
Continue laying out lines and dyeing the rug until you acheive your desired look. Let dye dry. Spray the rug with a dye setter to prevent further bleeding.
