We know that cushions are a simple way to update any room.
But with so many different shapes, sizes, colours and patterns to choose from, it can become a bit overwhelming when choosing the right ones for your space.
How to mix and match throw pillows
To help you get started, we spoke to the experts to get their tips and tricks for choosing and styling cushions.
1. Choose your colours
The first step is to think about the overall colour scheme of the room. Choose at least three colours pulled from other parts of the room, like the rug, bedding or a picture.
Stacy Lewis is the owner and Interior Designer at Eternity Modern. She says to “consider the overall colour scheme of your room. You’ll want to choose pillows that complement the existing colours rather than clash with them.”
2. Choose your textures
The next step is to consider the textures in your home or the room you are styling.
“A room with mostly smooth surfaces can benefit from a little bit of contrast in the form of a pillow with a more textured fabric,” says Stacy.
3. Mix and match
Buying cushions that match too well is a common mistake people make, says Stacey.
“Don’t be afraid to mix patterns. A little bit of a mismatch can actually add visual interest to a space,” she says. “Just make sure that the overall effect is pleasing to the eye.”
The fool-proof formula for styling cushions
Now you have colours, textures and patterns in mind, there’s one more tip that makes mixing and matching your pillows easier.
Lisa Alward, Principal Interior Designer at Bella Vie Interiors and author of the book Beautiful Life, shares her fool-proof formula for styling coloured cushions.
One pattern, one print, one solid colour
“An easy guide when it comes to coloured cushions, is to select one cushion with a large pattern, one cushion with a small print or monochrome design and one solid coloured cushion,” she says.
“Each one should have a single colour that ties them all together to achieve a cohesive look. Repeat this mix of three cushions on both ends of a large sofa for overall balance.”

Shape cushions: Kathryn Borglund is an Interior Designer at House of Hanalei. She says when placing cushions on the couch, do a “good ol’ karate chop to the centre of the cushion. This creates a consistent shape throughout all the cushions and gives them a tailored feel.”
Use a mix of inserts: Kathryn adds: “Select good quality cushion inserts that are full and have a mix of polyester and feather to maintain a plush shape.”
Play with cushion shapes and sizes: “Don’t just opt for your standard 50 x 50 cushions, play with scale and add in some different sizes, such as a rectangular cushion,” says Katherine.
