Sure, the primary purpose of a kitchen is functionality. But as homemakers, many dream of having a large space with lots of storage options.

But due to costs and the size of the house, sometimes the kitchen is the smallest room in the home. However, if there are ways to give the illusion that the kitchen is bigger than it is, we’re all ears.

So here are five expert tips from interior designers to help your kitchen look bigger than it is.

1. Installing an oversized island

We all dream of sitting around an island as a family, enjoying a stack of golden pancakes for breakfast. But unfortunately, some spaces aren’t made for islands, as this can sacrifice precious walkway space and make the kitchen look crowded.

2. Storing too many small appliances out in the open

With all the nifty appliances on the market that make cooking quick and easy, it’s hard not to have them all on display for easy accessibility. Caron Woolsey of CW Interiors has suggested to build an appliance garage to help keep surfaces clean and workspaces organised.

3. Relying on poor lighting

Like photography, it’s all about the lighting. Avoid dim and soft lights, which can make small kitchens look even tinier. Try changing up your light bulbs to brighter ones, replacing them entirely or even adding extra lights.

4. A dark colour palette

As many fashionistas wear dark colours to look slimmer, it’s a similar concept in the kitchen. Hillary Stamm of HMS Interiors said “Dark wood or painted cabinets can look great, but consider keeping the dark colours on the lower cabinets and making upper cabinets or shelves a lighter colour to give more visual breathing room.”

5. Installing a tiny sink

Killy Scheer of Scheer & Co. Interior Design suggests larger, single-basin sink can help with making your kitchen feel more expansive. Having one giant space (instead of tiny compartments) will emphasise the width of your countertops.
