Peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, apricots and prunes are a happy part of summer in Australia. These delicious stone fruits are a fabulous snack as they’re low GI, give you a boost of energy and they can keep your immune system  in tip top condition.

However, sometimes picking a winner can be difficult business, and it’s even worse when you get home and discover not one of the fruits you bought are ripe enough to be eaten.

What is a stone fruit?

According to the Australian Department of Industries ‘stone fruit’ is the general term used to collectively refer to cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots and prunes.

How to pick a winner

Stone fruit should give a little bit under the pressure of your grip when pressed and have a sweet fragrance. Avoid any fruit that has bruising or is too soft.

How to store your stone fruit

Store your stone fruit somewhere at room temperature until it has ripened. Once it’s ripe enough pop it in the fridge. Eat your stone fruit at room temperature for the best flavours.
