We tested 7 quiches from Coles, Woolworths and Aldi – the cheapest won

If price is a deal breaker for you, there's only one quiche at the top.

The question isn’t ‘how often do you eat quiche?’, it’s actually, ‘how often do you want to eat quiche but can’t be bothered making it?’ Many of us indeed love a slice of quiche filled with egg, leek and bacon, but there’s not usually the time to follow any lengthy recipes. So, it’s off to the supermarket to try and find the perfect light spring dinner or picnic dish. But how do you decide which quiche to buy? Is price the main factor you consider? Or is it premium ingredients and bold flavours?

The Better Homes and Gardens team, led by senior food editor Sarah Murphy, set out to discover the best supermarket quiche, looking at taste and price. We blind-tasted 7 different quiche Lorraine samples from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA. As it turns out, there were two winners, one with a cheap price tag, and another with extra fancy ingredients (and a price to match). Now, it’s up to you to decide which is worth the spend.

The Verdict

Quiche is not as popular as a frozen pizza, but it is still a well-liked food among our panel, especially with picnic season in full swing. Our panel of taste testers and food expert Sarah Murphy were very well aligned with this blind tasting, giving Signature Collection Double Smoked Bacon & Gruyere Quiche a top score. For the panel, Hedy’s Quiche Lorraine also ranked in first place.

Panel score: 7.4

A thick, buttery crust is a must for most quiche lovers. And Hedy’s Quiche Lorraine delivers, with a deep-dish pastry that’s thick and perfectly balances its egg filling. Panellists loved this option, calling it a ‘perfect dish to feed a crowd’ and saying it had a ‘great smoky bacon flavour’. To our surprise, this was the cheapest option on the list, sitting at just $1.32 per 100g.

For Sarah, this one was thoroughly enjoyable, with a great amount of egg filling and a ‘crunchy crust that complements it well’.

In tied first place, and our expert winner, was Woolworths Signature Collection Double Smoked Bacon & Gruyere Quiche. This quiche captured the hearts of our panellists, who love the more premium ingredients and higher quality of the quiche. The streaky bacon topping and inclusion of leek were the standout. The thinner, crispier crust was also a hit.

This sample was Sarah’s top pick, with its ‘really amazing flavour and thinner-style crust’. After comparing her scoring to the price, she did say that it was quite expensive, with just one small quiche costing $7 (or $4.50 per 100g). In comparison to our other panel winner, it’s much more pricey!

Panel score: 7.18

Home Chef Quiche Lorraine’s fluffy filling and firm base were the top features that stood out to our panel. This sample was considered to be a solid option, with a soft, rich filling that worked well with the surrounding pastry.

Sarah also enjoyed this sample, but did find the base to be a little denser than she would’ve liked.

Panel score: 7.18

Ruffie Smokey Bacon Leek & Cheddar Quiche was tied with Home Chef Quiche Lorraine at 7.18/10 for the panel. They also thought this sample was a good option. The taste-testers agreed that the ratio of crust to filling was ideal in this quiche. The flavours weren’t as strong in this quiche, but one panellist did comment that it tasted similar to a cheese and bacon roll!

Our food expert Sarah Murphy agreed with the panel, saying the proportions were spot on, but that there was ‘nothing really’ that stood out as extraordinary.

On the lower end of the taste test is Aldi with its World Kitchen Quiche Lorraine. Although some tasters thought it felt very authentic and homemade, most found fault with the pastry, saying it was ‘soggy and undercooked’.

Sarah agreed, saying that while the filling was tasty, the pastry didn’t feel quite as cooked as the other samples. Since she cooked all the samples herself (following cooking instructions as closely as possible), she mentioned that placing this one on a preheated tray may help cook off the bottom a bit more.

Sadly, both party-sized quiche options ended up at the bottom of the ranking. This sample struggled with flavour, with feedback saying it was ‘bland’ and a bit ‘flavourless’. On the positive side, a few liked the small size, and said it was a great ‘bite-sized’ snack.

Sarah explained that this sample was very plain, and definitely needed extra condiments (like chutney or herbs) to spice it up a little. After looking at the cross-section of these smaller quiches, she found that there was a huge lacking in egg filling and bacon.

Finally, Temptation Frozen Petite Quiche Lorraine came in last place. The lack of flavour was the main issue for our panel of taste testers. Again, this could be due to their small size!

Sarah gave it a few extra points because of the pastry base, which she found to be quite nice, thin and crispy. ‘Not super flavourful’ was her final comment for this sample.

How we tested the supermarket quiches

We blind taste-tested 7 different supermarket quiches from Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA. All samples were placed on identical trays and tasted without any accompaniments. The smaller ‘party-sized’ quiches were cut in half, while the large quiches had a few slices cut into them, allowing panellists to get a better experience of the crust thickness and size. The quiches were cooked as closely to the package instructions as possible, all done in the oven.

Samples were numbered from 1 to 7 to avoid bias. Taste-testers shared their responses via an anonymous online form, ranking each quiche sample out of ten for three criteria: taste, texture, and overall satisfaction. Taste-testers were also encouraged to leave constructive comments on what they liked and disliked about each sample.

How we selected which supermarket frozen pizzas to test

To be included in our quiche taste test, products had to be widely available in supermarkets nationally. This meant choosing the most common brands available in a wide range of stores and the largest size possible to cater for our taste test panel size. All the quiches chosen were in stock at the time of purchase. We decided to only include quiche Lorraine, to help with the sample size, and ensure that it was appealing and available to all of our readers.

Products are chosen at the discretion of the Better Homes and Gardens editorial team, and no payment was received from brands or retailers to be featured in this taste test.
