While summer is known for being an ideal time to head to the beach, play in the pool, enjoy a barbecue and dine alfresco, it’s also the time of year when everything is, well, hot. And a fan can be one of the best ways to keep cool without breaking the bank – especially the portable kind (if you don’t have ceiling fans already).

“Portable fans are designed for targeted cooling and can be moved wherever you need them,” Adam Duggan, category expert at Appliances Online, tells Better Homes & Gardens Australia. “Their strength lies in convenience and flexibility.”

When temperatures rise, you may be tempted to buy the cheapest fan you can find, but it’s worth shopping around for one that fits your budget and needs. I know from personal experience how noisy some of those cheap ones can be!

To help you choose the best fan for your needs, I’ve researched the market to find the best pedestal, tower, bladeless, desk and small portable/personal fans based on features including fan speeds, noise levels, controls and customer reviews when relevant. Better still, some are on sale now.

What’s the best type of fan?

“Ceiling fans circulate air evenly throughout a room, creating a consistent breeze,” Appliances Online category expert Adam Duggan says. So they tend to be considered the best choice for cooling a whole room.

But if you’re not in a position to install a ceiling fan, a pedestal, tower, desk or portable personal fan may be the next best thing. So what’s the best option?

“It really depends on what you’re after,” Adam says.

“Pedestal fans deliver strong airflow, making them ideal for cooling an entire room. Tower fans are slimmer, quieter, and more energy-efficient, providing a gentle, even breeze. Desk fans are best for personal use, cooling only the area directly in front of them.

There are also handheld and outdoor fans that can be great “whether you’re in the backyard, on a picnic or camping. Look for rechargeable battery models so you’re not tied to a power point, they’re designed to handle more sun and dust than indoor fans, and some even feature clips or misting functions for extra comfort,” he says, adding that the Shark FlexBreeze is a great option for versatility.”

Can a tower fan cool a room?

For their compact size, tower fans can produce a reasonable amount of airflow and can be the more economical option.

“If energy efficiency is your priority, choose a tower fan – but if you want maximum airflow, a pedestal fan is the way to go.”

Are 3 or 5-blade pedestal fans better?

The amount of blades your pedestal fan should have really comes down to your priorities. Fans with fewer blades (like three) are slightly more efficient at circulating air, while fans with more blades (say, five) might be slightly quieter.

What to know about fans and noise

If you’ve ever been near an industrial strength fan (or one that sounds like it is), you’ll know sometimes they can be so loud you can hardly speak over them. But the good news is that most home models are designed to be quieter than that.

According to Australian consumer advocacy group CHOICE, pedestal and tower fan noise levels typically range from 26 decibels (dB) to 62dB, which is around the same as a normal conversation. In comparison, industrial fans can have noise levels above 85dB – around the same as a lawn mower, which makes them a major factor in workplace health and safety requirements, according to details in a paper on the Australasian Acoustical Society website.

Bladeless and tower fans tend to be quieter than pedestal fans because of their designs. But if you’ve had a pedestal fan before, that should give you an idea of what to expect for new models with the same amount of blades.

How to stay cool with a pedestal, tower, desk or personal fan

Most of us have used a fan before, but some days it can feel like they’re not quite cutting it. So I asked Adam to share some tips on how to get the most out of them.

“To get the best results from a fan, point it directly at you or towards the area where you spend most of your time,” he says.

“If you’re trying to cool a whole room, angle it to help air circulate or use it to push hot air out a window. Even small adjustments, like tilting the fan up or down, can make a noticeable difference. When it’s hotter inside than outside, positioning a fan to blow warm air out one window while drawing cooler air in from another can create effective cross-ventilation.”
