  • Don’t pay full price: Walking pads frequently go on sale. Before buying, make sure you have the best price.

How walking pads work

Unlike treadmills, which are basically the older, bigger and faster sibling, walking pads are usually lightweight and foldable, with convenient features and adjustable speeds that usually range from around 0.5km per hour (very light touch) to 9km per hour (jogging speed). Some also have an adjustable incline, which is great if you want to add some resistance while you walk.

They also tend to be more affordable than a treadmill (or even some other home exercise equipment), with prices starting at around $180.

More importantly, a walking pad allows you to get your steps in while you’re doing something else, which means you don’t always have to find a dedicated time for exercise. There’s even research that suggests walking while you work can increase energy, focus and creative thinking, while reducing stress.

What is the difference between a walking pad and a treadmill?

There are a couple of differences between a walking pad and a treadmill, with the main one being options for customisation. Because a walking pad is usually smaller and portable, it does not have as many options to customise your exercise. The other differences between a walking pad and a treadmill include:

– Portability: a treadmill is often only able to stay in one place, because it is bulky and heavy due to the frame and large motor. A walking pad is most often portable, with folding capabilities and built-in wheels.

– Built on frame: a treadmill will always have a standing frame and support for your upper body, while a walking pad is most commonly just the bottom ‘walking’ component.

– Able to fit in small spaces: because a walking pad is smaller and more compact than a treadmill, it can fit in smaller spaces and has the ability to fit under desks, beds and cabinets when not in use.

How long should I walk on a walking pad?

If you are just beginning your exercise journey with a walking pad, it is best to start slowly. While walking may seem quite straightforward on a walking pad, it can be surprisingly labour-intensive, and sometimes tricky to hop on and off if you set the speed too high.

What are the disadvantages of walking pads?

Walking pads do have a few drawbacks to consider. They usually offer limited speed and no incline options, making them less versatile than traditional treadmills. The walking surface is smaller, which can feel restrictive for some users, and they’re not designed for running or high-intensity workouts.

Durability may also be an issue with heavy or frequent use, and in small apartments or shared spaces, noise and vibrations could be disruptive (depending on the type of walking pad you buy).

Is a walking pad as effective as walking?

Yes, a walking pad can be as effective as walking outdoors in terms of movement and calorie burn, since you’re still getting the same step count and low-impact exercise. However, it may not provide the same variety as walking outside, where terrain, fresh air and natural light add extra health benefits.
