Travel journalist and frequent flyer Angus Kidman has revealed that he’s a huge fan of The Reject shop for bargain travel essentials. Priding himself on his ability to travel light, he says “it’s full of cheap travel goods and accessories, and the stores are everywhere.”
Here are his top 7 finds:
1. Digital luggage scale, $9
This handy item accurately weighs your luggage so you’ll never be caught out. According to Angus, “The Reject Shop models weighs just 51g and is small enough to fit in my jeans pocket.”
2. Outbound foldable packing cube, $3
These versatile cubes make packing a cinch. Angus says: “There are cheaper deals to be had elsewhere on buying bulk lots of packing cubes, but that often results in an excess of sizes you don’t need.”
3. Travel Bag, $6
Easy to carry, this simple and streamlined design won’t date. Angus explains: “I regularly use this to transport my Kindle around. That protects the screen, and I can use the extra pockets to store cables, chargers and earphones.”
4. Luggage scale with tape measure, $7
Never get caught with excess baggage. According to Angus, “while you won’t ever need to replace the batteries, this weighs a fair bit more and isn’t quite as accurate.”
5. Emergency ponchos, 2pk, $3.50
These lightweight ponchos are easy to stash in your luggage. Angus admits: “I’m not going to claim these are a positive fashion statement, but they weigh practically nothing and I always have one stashed in my travel bag in case of an unexpected downpour.”
6. Outbound travel shoe pouch, $3
Keep your shoes organised with this tidy pouch. Angus says, “a dedicated pouch makes sense to keep muck off everything else. Better off paying for a sturdier model than relying on a flimsy plastic bag.”
7. Jumbo bag, $3
While most people use these versatile bags for laundry, they’re also perfect for storage. Angus says that he’s “not suggesting that you use them as luggage: they’re not tough enough to survive on a luggage carousel What they’re ideal for is storing stuff inside your larger suitcases (why waste that space storing them empty?).”
