Recently, we posted about loyalty programs and reward points, and how to use them to your advantage. Now that you’re up and running with your Velocity Frequent Flyer membership and raking in those Velocity Points, it’s time we had a look at all the great ways you can redeem them! When you see how many choices you have, once you’ve got a few Points up your sleeve, the hardest part will be deciding how best to use them. If you’re not already a member, don’t forget to sign up.
No Ticket Required
Remember, you don’t have to be a frequent flyer to be a Frequent Flyer Program member. You can earn Velocity Frequent Flyer Points both in the air and on the ground, with even minor purchases counting towards your Points total.
Flights
By far, one of the most popular ways to redeem Velocity Points is on flights. Air travel can be expensive and between flights, accommodation and spending money it’s easy to drop a small fortune on even a short trip, so if you can get your flights on Points that’s a huge head start on your holiday. As an example, Velocity Frequent Flyer member and Aussie blogger The Organised Housewife, aka Katrina Springer, recently blogged about how she is working to consolidate her reward programs to amass enough Points to take her family to Disneyland for her 40th birthday.
Velocity members can redeem Velocity Points for flights to over 600 destinations worldwide, on three types of tickets:
Reward seat: The most popular ‘Points’ seat, because of its low Points price.
Any seat: When you can’t get the Reward Seat you want on Points, you can redeem your Velocity Points for ‘any seat’ (hence the name) with Virgin Australia. These have a higher Points price, but offer you greater flexibility.
Upgrades: Use your Points to upgrade your Economy ticket to Premium Economy or Business Class and fly at the pointy end.
Everything you need to know about using Velocity Points to book your flights is on the Velocity website.
Accommodation and Car Hire
You might prefer to use your Points once you get to your destination, on accommodation or car hire.
Velocity’s hotel booking partner Kaligo lets you redeem your Points at over 550,000 hotels worldwide (you’ll need a minimum of 4,000 points). Or you can use the Points plus Pay option and earn 3 Points for every $1 you spend on the cash component of your booking, so you can use your Points and earn at the same time, which you can put toward your next trip!
Or, if getting around at your destination is important, hire yourself some wheels with your Points through Velocity’s partner Europcar.
Other Travel Perks
You can also transfer existing hotel reward program points with some hotel partners, including Hilton Honors, to your Velocity account. Or use your Points for single entry lounge passes or an annual membership to the Virgin Australia Lounge. Silver Velocity members can also use Points for a discounted annual lounge membership. Points can also be used for limousine transfers, concierge services and medical travel assistance. Find out more here.
Fuel
You can also use your Velocity Points to pay for your purchases at over 1,000 participating BP service stations. Whether it’s for a road trip or just getting from A to B, you can use your Points to keep you moving.
Sport
Shop for fitness and sports apparel, products and experiences with one of Australia’s best online sports stores, onsport.com.au.
You can redeem your Velocity Points or use a combination of Points plus Pay on a wide range of products from the world’s biggest names in sport gear.
