Aussies love their morning caffeine fix and when travelling, it can be hard to find that perfect brew. To help, Intrepid Travel has created a guide to local coffee around the globe in their annual Adventure Travel Index.
Istanbul, Turkey
Drink like the locals do in Turkey with a warm cup of Turk Hahvesi for just $1.95 AUD. This coffee is a must try and has been described in the past as something that is “remembered for 40 years.” Traditionally the coffee, which is listed on the UNESCO intangible heritage register, is served after meals from a long-handles copper pot called a cezve.
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee. In fact, traditional coffee ceremonies are a distinguished part of the culture, with the brewing and serving process lasting up to two hours. Buna can be bought for 25c AUD at a roadside cafe and can even be mixed with tea to create a spritz or enjoyed with a side of popcorn.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Cafe sua da is the local coffee in Hoi An and Aussies can enjoy a cup for $1.80. Coarsely ground coffee beans are loaded into a drip filter, which spits out super-strong coffee, one drop at a time. Ice cubes and sweetened condensed milk are added for those wanting a more refreshing drink.
Bogota, Columbia
Columbian coffee is often regarded as some of the highest quality coffee in the world and Aussies can enjoy a cup of Tinto for just $1.70. Colombia’s unique geography offers the ideal climate for producing high-quality coffee and should be a destination to put on all coffee lovers bucket lists.
Rome, Italy
Drink like the Italians do and drink your cup of espresso while standing at the bar. An espresso in Rome will cost $1.60 AUD when standing at a local coffee shops bar, however it can cost double or more if you choose to sit down.
Stockholm, Sweden
In Sweden, taking a break for a cup of coffee is known as Fika. You can enjoy everything from a cappuccino to a kaffee latte, but the classic black drip coffee is standard. At home, Swedish people are known to make kokkaffe – or boiled coffee. After a good sweet treat to go with your coffee? You can’t go wrong with a kanelbulle (cinnamon roll).
