5 things you need to tell your travel insurer

Before you go on holiday.

There’s been a lot of coverage in the media over the past few months about travel insurance companies that refuse to help their customers due to ‘existing conditions’ that were never reported. For many of us, travel insurance is a case of paying for the policy at your local travel agent, then heading off on holiday without a second thought. However, what we should really be doing is getting in touch with the insurer and double-checking exactly what they need to know about in case of a claim, and what you will be covered for.

Here are five things you probably never knew you had to disclose to your travel insurer.

1. Pregnancy complications

According to Tick Travel Insurance, you need to declare any pregnancy-related conditions or complications that you know of before you travel.

2. If you’ve had surgery

if you have experienced a condition that has required surgery in the past two years of your travel date Compare Travel Insurance recommends having the condition  assessed by your insurer.

3. Mole removal

If you’ve ever had a mole removed you need to tell your travel insurance company, regardless whether the removal was for cosmetic or medical reasons.

4. Broken bones

If you have ever broken or fractured a bone you need to report the details to your chosen insurer. Even old injuries that have since been treated and completely healed for years need to be declared, as some complications or methods of medical treatment for broken and fractured bones can result in chronic conditions later down the road.

5. Food allergies

While sampling the different foods from around the world is usually high on any globetrotters list, food allergies must be declared before you travel to your insurer. Fast Cover recommends researching insurance companies that cover people with common food allergies such as nuts, eggs, dairy, and soy.
