12 toxic things you should never feed your pet

Keep this list handy.

Not giving in to the sweet face of our fur-babies when they hassle us for food is undeniably one of life’s great challenges. However, there are so many foods humans regularly eat that are toxic or deadly to our feline friends and canine companions, and it’s important to be aware of what these foods are, and what to do in the case that they’re ingested by our beloved pet.

Dr Cherlene Lee is a vet and the owner of My Vet Animal Hospital in Sydney, and she has identified 12 foods that are commonly found in our homes that can be toxic to cats and dogs.

So many foods I love are toxic to fur-babies, when in doubt about a food, don’t feed it to them” says Cherlene. “If your fur-baby ever gets into any of this, you should call your vet immediately for a course of action.”

Things you should never feed your pet cat or dog

  1. Chocolate
  2. Onion
  3. Garlic
  4. Grapes
  5. Fatty Foods
  6. Macadamias
  7. Paracetamol
  8. Xylitol (artificial sweetener)
  9. Coffee
  10. Alcohol
  11. Avocado
  12. Pits

Foods that are safe to share with your four-legged friend

  1. Strawberries
  2. Blueberries
  3. Watermelon (with seeds removed)
  4. Banana
  5. Apples (with no seeds)
  6. Pears (with no seeds)
  7. Sardines
  8. Salmon
  9. Cooked sweet potato
  10. Cooked Pumpkin
