Stylist Jerrie-Joy reveals her top hosting tips for outdoor entertaining

Summer soirées made easy.

As the weather warms up, there’s something magical about moving the festivities outdoors. The fresh air, sunny skies, and natural surroundings make any gathering feel extra special — even from the comfort of your own backyard. And when you take the time to create a comfortable, stylish setup, you’ll find guests staying well past sunset.

So, where to start? We sat down with food and prop stylist Jerrie-Joy to discuss all things alfresco entertaining, from how to create an inviting space to her best crowd-pleasing dishes. Here, Jerrie-Joy shares her top tips for crafting the ultimate outdoor gathering.

“Take the time to choose and invest in a piece of furniture that you know will be with you for a long time,” says Jerrie-Joy.

Comfort is key

For Jerrie-Joy, the secret to any successful outdoor gathering starts with a comfortable space. “If you want to sit outside, you need to be comfortable, whether that’s with cushions, throws or cosy seating that you can lounge in with a drink,” she says. “No one wants to sit upright outside!”

The best way to achieve a comfortable outdoor zone is with modular seating that can adapt to any occasion. Pictured above, Amart’s Palazza 4 Piece Lounge outdoor setting can be easily maneuvered to suit any space. The chaise lounge and armchairs are designed with luxurious, high-density cushions and deep seating that invite guests to sink in and unwind — preferably with a cocktail in hand.

Shade solutions

“Living in Australia, we want to enjoy as much time outside as possible. When I’m entertaining, I like to offer people shade so they don’t have to leave when the sun gets too hot,” Jerrie-Joy says. “And don’t forget to put out an Esky with lots of ice and a choice of cool drinks.”

During a hot summer’s day, ensure you provide plenty of shade with standalone umbrellas — try Amart’s tilting Shade Master for flexible shade — parasols and undercover zones. If you’re looking for a more permanent solution to make outdoor dining an everyday affair, turn to blinds, awnings and pergolas to help dial down the heat.

“The retro food trend is very fun to play with, as you can borrow from the past and make it new again,” Jerrie-Joy says.

Fun and fresh

Counter the warmer weather with a delightful menu of ice-cold drinks and fresh food.  Jerrie-Joy suggests preparing a batch of fruity cocktails the night before, so they’re ready to greet your guests as they walk through the door.

“Definitely don’t make a recipe that you’ve never tried before,” the stylist says. “Stick to tried-and-true recipes that you feel comfortable serving and have everything plated the night before so that you wake up feeling stress-free.”

In terms of the menu, Jerrie-Joy leans into the retro food trend with Prosecco-infused jelly squares: “I think it’s really fun to borrow from the past and bring it into the present, making the retro aesthetic more modern and more approachable for people.”

This slatted coffee table (included in Amart’s Palazzo outdoor setting) is the perfect size to dine alfresco.

Personal touches

Above all, outdoor entertaining is an excuse to relax with friends and family, indulge in delicious food and have fun with your decor. “Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns, eras, and styles,” Jerrie-Joy says.

“When creating a cosy outdoor space that your friends want to stay in, mix and match cushions, add texture, have fun with colour, and keep the drinks in ice buckets near the table,” she adds. “When the sun dips, bring out soft throws, warm lighting and citronella candles.”
