So you’ve finished a bottle of shiraz or chardonnay, but what do you do with the leftover cork? You could use them to make a squashy hat, a birdhouse or save them for this nifty kitchen hack.

Buzzfeed producer, Andrew Ilnyckyj, shared this great way to use corks in a clip via the video-sharing platform, Tik Tok. On the food-focused account @abouttoeat, the 32-year-old revealed that he first came across this useful hack while filming with famous Chef Motokichi in Kyoto, Japan.

Ilnyckyj realised that there was a special reason behind the placement of corks. The cork or corks would act as a safety measure under the handle of saucepan lids in Japanese kitchens as they would never heat up. So instead of grabbing the metal handle directly, chefs could safely pinch the cork instead. This clever trick was also a great time saver as it would reduce the time spent putting an oven mitt on and off.

After trying and testing the kitchen hack for himself, Ilnyckyj found that sparkling wine corks worked best as they wedge under handles more easily than other varieties.

The video has since gone viral with 5.5 million views, over 500,000 likes 42,000 saves.

“This is SO smart,” said one follower.

“The more you know,” added another.
