3 mistakes you’re making with your gold jewellery

And how to clean it correctly.

Gold jewellery, whether yellow-gold, rose-gold or white-gold, is a timeless adornment that always looks a million bucks. Although gold jewllery is incredibly common these days, not everyone takes care of their precious metals correctly.  We spoke to jewellery designer Zoë Richardson, founder of Zoë Alexandria, about the mistakes people make when caring for gold jewellery, and the best way to clean it.

What do people most often get wrong about caring for gold jewellery?

Zoe explains that there are many easy mistakes people make with gold jewellery.

“Care should be taken with all your jewellery pieces and we encourage our customers to keep jewellery in its packaging or a jewellery box when not wearing it to help protect it,” says Zoe. She suggests that:

  1. Never wear jewellery when showering or swimming in salt or chlorine water, or when performing physical activity.
  2. Be conscious of applying perfumes, oils and body lotions when wearing jewellery.
  3. When it comes to caring for white gold jewellery vs. yellow or rose gold, there is a slight difference. White gold jewellery is generally plated with white rhodium to make it nice and bright, and this plating will eventually wear off over time. Zoe suggests getting your white gold pieces replated every 12-18 months depending on the wear and tear.

What is the best way to clean gold jewellery?

According to Zoe, the best person to ask about this is the jewllery you bought the piece form.

“Some stone-set jewellery will need extra care when cleaning. Most reputable jewellers will offer a jewellery cleaning service or sell cleaning solutions for you to use at home. However, avoid ‘home remedies’ found online as this can risk damaging your gold!”
