As part of the 2018 Melbourne International Arts Festival, Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens will be the site for a new show called Fire Gardens by French artists Compagnie Carabosse, and it’s shaping up to be the must-see event of the festival.
Compagnie Carabosse have spent the past 20 years showcasing art installations of fire at places like Stonehenge, The Kremlin, and a former prison in Morocco. Now, the luminary artists will light up Melbourne’s gardens like we’ve never seen before.
The installation includes 30 giant fire palettes that hold 6720 fire pots, and 600 different ‘fire bulbs’ which will be hung from tree branches throughout the gardens, creating a true garden of fire that will be filled with the sounds of an atmospheric soundtrack that promises to be every bit as brilliant as the sight itself. There will also be a 120-metre charcoal river of flames that will snake through the Royal Botanic Gardens, and the organisers expect to use around 14 tonnes of charcoal over the four nights of shows.
The art show is suitable for all ages and is a promenade event in an outdoor environment, so Melbourne International Arts Festival recommends that show attendees wear comfortable shoes and warm clothes. No animals, chairs, eskies, food or drinks are allowed at the event, but the event hosts promise food and drink stalls will be available on-site.
Fire Gardens is open from Wednesday the 10 of October to Saturday the 13 of October and tickets are $25.
