Even if it’s not raining, making your own slime is lots of fun. Kids love exploring this slimy texture. Playing with slime can also help little ones regulate some big emotions.
The best part is it’s really easy to make using ingredients you probably already have at home. If you like, you can add food colouring and other decorations to make your slime sparkle.
How to make slime
Although lots of recipes on the internet use borax to make slime, it’s not recommended – especially if you’re making slime with kids. It can cause serious damage if ingested.
Here’s two easy recipes to try at home.
Easy DIY slime recipes
Below are two recipes for slime that don’t include Borax. That said, one does contain eye contact solution and is not recommended for really young children. The other is made from chia seeds and is perfectly safe for children of all ages.

- Add the other half of the eye contact solution and mix.

How to make slime without glue or borax
This slime recipe requires three ingredients: chia seeds, water and cornflour. It’s perfect for little kids who like putting everything in their mouth. While it does need to be made the night before, it’s worth the wait because it’s free from borax, glue and contact lens solution. Winning!
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup chia seeds
- 1 cup water
- 3-5 cups of cornflour
- Food colouring (optional)
Method:
- Mix chia seeds and water in a bowl. If you like, you can add food colouring to the water.
- Leave in the fridge overnight
- Scoop out the excess water and start adding cornflour one cup at a time until you reach the right consistency.
As this is a food item, your chia seed slime will need to be stored in the fridge. It should last 2 or 3 days. Make sure you check it for mould before each play session. You will need to hydrate the slime again at each session. Add 1 tbsp of water at a time until the slime is back to it’s slimy self.
