There’s nothing worse than dry, cracked heels that won’t go away.
The good news is there’s a really simple solution that you can do while you sleep.
How to heal cracked heels
Taking to Instagram to share her number tip for people with “super, dry, cracked feet”, Lindsey Zubritsky, MD, a board-certified dermatologist best known on social media as @DermGuru, reccomends anyone with dry feet to give slugging a go.
“I’m a dermatologist, and this is the number-one hygiene hack I give my patients with super dry, cracked feet,” she said, talking about foot slugging. “I promise you this is going to work—it works on almost all my patients.”
What is slugging?
According to The Washington Post, “Slugging is a catchy term that means slathering your face with petroleum jelly as the last step of your evening skin-care routine. The practice leaves your face as slimy as slug mucus (hence the name).”
While it’s typically performed on your face, slugging works wonders on your feet too!
The foot-slugging process
To restore your feet to their former glory, you’ll need to soak them for about 10 minutes or until they are nice and soft.
“Then you’re going to coat those bad boys in the thickest ointment you have—AKA your Vaseline. Lube them up,” says Dr Zubritsky.
The soak-and-smear method
Next, grab two pairs of cotton socks!
“One of the socks should be damp, and the other one should be dry,” says Dr Zubritsky. “Put the damp sock on first, then cover it with a dry sock.
“This is called the ‘Soak and Smear’ method.”
If you can handle sleeping with socks on, let alone one of them being wet – do it. This will make all the difference.
“Go to sleep and I promise you, your feet are going to smooth as a baby’s bum,” she says.
If your feet are dry, you may need to apply a chemical exfoliant first to loosen and remove some dead skin.
