How to clean cushions with non-removable covers
However, all that lounging around can take a toll on your cushions, and you might be surprised at just how dirty they can get. While cleaning cushions with removable covers is relatively simple, what about those with non-removable covers? How do you keep them clean and fresh?
In the September issue of Better Homes and Gardens, Georgina Bitcon offers a solution for cleaning couch cushions with non-removable covers. She emphasises that although upholstery with zip-off covers that can be tossed in the washing machine is a dream come true, there are effective methods for everything else.
To tackle the challenge of cleaning non-removable cushion covers, Georgina shares a simple cleaning recipe.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Whisk
- Water
- Dishwashing liquid
- Vinegar
Method
Step. 1
Begin by whisking together 2 cups of water, 3 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid, and 3 tablespoons of vinegar to create a foamy cleaning solution.
Step. 2
Apply the foam evenly across the cushion, ensuring edge-to-edge coverage.
Step. 3
Using a wrung-out cloth, gently wipe off the foam, dirt, and stains.
Step. 4
Leave the cushion to air dry in the sun, which helps in drying and naturally freshening the fabric.
Maintaining the cleanliness and longevity of your cushions doesn’t stop at cleaning. Prevention is key to keeping them looking and feeling their best for extended periods. Here are some additional care tips:
- Spot cleaning: Address any visible stains promptly using a fabric cleaner or a mixture of mild detergent and water. Remember to blot the stain gently, avoiding aggressive rubbing that could spread it.
- Regular vacuuming: Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove loose dirt, dust, and pet hair from the upholstery cushions. This step helps prevent the buildup of debris that can become deeply embedded over time.
- Enzyme spray: Consider using an enzyme spray designed for upholstery. These sprays effectively break down and remove organic stains and odours, such as those caused by food, pet accidents, or body oils.
