You spot grease all over your stove from yesterday’s big fry-up while you’re trying to cook dinner. The knee-jerk reaction might be to put on a pair of rubber gloves, grab your cleaning supplies and get to work. But before you do, know that this could be doing more harm then good.
Firstly, remember that under high heat, mild detergents can become harmful. As the chemicals vaporise, you and your family are taking the risk of breathing in potentially harmful toxins.
Also, the rag or sponge in your hand often is made from synthetic fibres or plastics that will melt or burn as it comes into contact with heat. Once again, this can get into the air and your lungs and it’s just not worth taking that risk.
You might decide to pop on a mask while doing this, but it’s best practice to just wait until your stove cools.
Bedsides health reasons, when you clean a hot stove your cleaning products are in fact less effective. The heat from the stove is actually breaking down the chemicals so they won’t work as well as anticipated.
Of course this doesn’t mean that you have to wait all afternoon. But even waiting around 15 minutes is ideal.
