What is a mattress protector?
A mattress protector is generally a thin piece of bedding material that fits around your mattress, going on like a fitted sheet or encasing the mattress completely. It’s usually waterproof.
Why do you need a mattress protector?
Having a mattress protector on your bed protects you and your mattress from bacteria such as sweat, lint, dust mites, animal dander, mucous, soil, sand, cosmetics and insect parts – just to name a few – that can build up in your mattress over time. Using a mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress by five to 10 years, depending on the quality of the mattress and the protector.
Can you wash a mattress protector?
Yes, you can. Pop it in the machine on a cold or lukewarm gentle wash and never use harsh or abrasive cleaners on it. Do not put it in the tumble dryer, let it dry in the sun or indoors where it’s warm. You should also never dry clean a mattress protector.
How often should you wash a mattress protector?
At least every two months, but more if you have pets, have allergies, of if the protector has suffered any spills.
