Five small living ideas that make the most of your space

Downsizing doesn't mean missing out.

With the tiny house trend on the rise and housing affordability a common Australian concern, small space living is becoming more and more popular. The option to downsize can be a considered choice for people looking to save money, reduce their eco-footprint or merely want a more streamlined existence. Downsizing doesn’t necessarily mean giving up your love for design or decorating. In fact, working within tighter parameters can help to empower ingenious creativity that will give your small space BIG impact.

Colour

A thoughtful paint job is the first step in making your small space feel spacious and inviting. A light or neutral shade on walls will help reflect light making a room feel open and uncluttered. To create the illusion of height, paint the ceiling and joining in the same shade. If your space is narrow, paint the back wall and one adjoining wall in a neutral tone to help widen it out.

Multi-purpose furniture

Whether it is a couch that turns into a bed or a footrest that doubles as storage, dual function furniture is essential to small living. For living/dining/entertaining areas, this DIY side table with a secret is perfect! The unassuming piece of furniture looks excellent along any wall, however, when guests come for dinner, the top opens up like a book, and you have a stunning dining table complete with fold-out legs. Mirrors

It is one of the oldest tricks in the books; however the magic of mirrors and their ability to fake added space is immeasurable when it comes to your tiny area. For a quirky take, replace your gallery wall with different sized mirrors in antique frames. Spray paint gold for a rustic charm. A standing mirror against a wall or to hide a corner will do wonders when it comes to making your space feel more significant than it is.

Lighting

Levelled lighting in a small room or area, gives the illusion of more space by filling the room with a warm and welcoming impression. A floor lamp placed in a corner, coupled with a statement pendant will draw the gaze up and out.

Declutter

Finally, downsizing means DOWNSIZING. Rid your home of any unnecessary items that make your space feel bulky. Furniture wise, keep just a couple of key statement pieces per room. Try not to over decorate or fill a room to the brim. When in doubt, chuck it out!
