Your choice of vanity will have a big impact on your bathroom renovation. The style and shape can make it either a subdued element or a signature piece of your bathroom. There are also practical considerations as far as basins and storage.
Wall hung or floor mounted?
Wall hung vanities are popular for contemporary renovations. As more of the floor area of a bathroom is visible, they also make it feel larger. The space illusion is enhanced because they eye is drawn to the width of the vanity and not it’s height. If storage is at a premium, a vanity sitting on the floor is a wise choice. They’re also great for budget makeovers. Pick up one that’s the same size as your existing vanity and you can cover up any unsightly areas that the old one might be hiding.
Bowl or basin?
An early style choice is the decision to have a top with a basin built in or a bowl sitting on top of the vanity. A bowl adds a sculptural element to the bathroom and introduces a soft, curved shape into what are mostly straight lines and hard edges.
The built in basin has less of an impact on the bathroom, as the eye isn’t drawn to the vanity as it is with a bowl. For easier cleaning, go for a moulded top. The top and basin are all one piece so there’s no cracks or crevices that you have to get into.
Room for two
A vanity with double sinks is a must for busy bathrooms. When the morning rush is on, there’s room for two there’s no more arguing over who has to get ready first. They’re also popular in ensuites for the ‘His and Hers’ theme.
Add an extra element
Use your vanity to bring an extra element to your bathroom décor. A timber vanity brings a touch of warmth to a stark bathroom of white glossy tiles and loads of glass. If timber isn’t your thing, a vanity in a contrasting colour to the rest of the bathroom can achieve the same effect.
DIY vanities
You can create a unique feature and save money by building your own vanity. Laminated timber panels can be cut and put together to suit any sized space or your requirements. There’s also a range of options for the final look. Use clear polyurethane to highlight the natural beauty of the timber or change the colour using a stain. A dark stain adds contemporary style while a whitewashed look suits a beachy theme. Make sure you go over any stains with a clear finish to protect the timber against moisture.
