3 images that prove the beautiful homes on Instagram aren’t always real

It’s time for a reality check.

A survey conducted by The Ideal Home Show in the UK has discovered that one in six people have posted fake Instagram pictures of their homes to social media. That is, they’ve posted an image that isn’t theirs and passed it off as their own home. Furthermore, some surveyed participants even reported buying furniture and homewares, taking pictures of it, then returning it.

The survey was conducted for the Ideal Home Show, whose spokesman Justin Levett said: ‘It’s making people feel the need to not just keep up with their friends but to keep up with people they don’t even know across the world.’

In an age where social media rules supreme and everyone is looking to achieve an Insta-worthy home, we start to wonder – it is actually possible?

Speaking to Domain, three prominent Instagram interiors influencers revealed the truth behind their artfully arranged photos.

No curtains? No problems

Interior stylist Tara Wokulski of @coco.camellia revealed that she doesn’t actually have sheer curtains on her windows as her images would suggest. They’re linen bed sheets hung over the ugly curtains her landlord wouldn’t allow her to change.

Non-existent room

Stylist Cassandra Milne of @thewhitecottage_ divulged that the ‘ideal office space’ in her feed doesn’t actually exist. She simply rearranged the furniture, took the shot, then put all the furniture back where it actually belonged.

Faux ‘minimal’ kitchens

Creative stylist Sara Dheays of @coastalbysarah says that her kitchen doesn’t actually look pristine everyday. She just hides the pots, pans, bowls and clutter behind the bench to get the shot.

In a world where everyone presents their ‘best life’ on the ‘gram, it’s important to remember that many of these beautiful images were possible only due to the hard work, styling expertise and clever angles utilised by the stylists behind the pics. While it’s great to use these images as inspiration, it’s important to remember that having a home YOU love is more important than impressing people on the internet.
