Normally Ikea can do no wrong on our eyes, but in this instance the Swedish retail giant has slipped up geographically – and diplomatically.
Social media users spotted that the shop is currently selling a world map that depicts a blank space where New Zealand should be.
“Ikea’s map game is not on point,” one user wrote on Reddit.
Reddit user Jibbles666 discovered the error on the Bjorksta world map while shopping in an American Ikea store.
Ikea has admitted its error and issued an apology.
“Ikea is responsible for securing correct and compliant motifs on all our products,” an Ikea spokesperson said.
“We can see that the process has failed regarding the product BJÖRKSTA world map – we regret this mistake and apologise. We will take the necessary actions and the product is now being phased out from our stores.”
It’s not the first time that New Zealand has been omitted from world maps.
In fact, it’s an issue that has gone to the top of New Zealand’s top brass. Comedian Rhys Darby teamed up with the country’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, to produce a video entitled #GetNZonthemap, which accuses other countries of attempting to steal their tourists.
