Ikea Australia’s announced a new collection we can get on board with.
Watch: How to create the perfect shelfie
Not your everyday run-of-the-mill collection, the Swedish homewares giant has partnered with seven social businesses across Asia to create Mävinn. This new collection aims to provide long-term jobs for vulnerable groups and people in rural areas.
Ikea’s Mävinn collection
Paulin Machado, Designer at Ikea of Sweden says Mävinn celebrates traditional craftsmanship and the remarkable people behind each handmade accessory.
“Our initial idea was to emphasise craftsmanship and bring the person who made the product to the forefront.
“This led us to think about the experience of visiting a local craft market, the interesting objects you might find there and the people selling their crafts.
“Every item has a distinctive look and rustic feel, blending colourful splashes with natural materials through embroidery and woven designs where their handmade nature gives its uniqueness.”
What’s in the Mävinn collection
The collection features 20 handmade accessories for the home, including rugs, cushion covers and baskets. Each item is made from cotton, over-run materials from denim production and natural fibres such as paper made from the bark of mulberry trees, banana fibre and jute.
These natural fibre materials were chosen for their durability and renewability and their potential to create employment opportunities throughout the sourcing and production process.
Mävinn will be available in Ikea stores and online across Australia from June 2023. Product availability is subject to store location.
