Winter can be a grey and dreary season, but if you’re armed with a few pro decorating tricks, and know about the latest trends, then the chilly season can be the perfect time to amp up the style in your home.
We spoke to interior designer Krystal Sagona of Interior Flow about the emerging decorating trends for winter 2019, and what her favourite decorating tricks are.
The emerging trends for winter 2019
Bring the outdoors in
Krystal explains that by letting nature inspire your decorating choices, your home will feel like a safe haven from busy lives and technology. “Using nature as inspiration for respite and calm to our busy technology-infiltrated lives brings the outdoors in as we hibernate for winter,” says Krystal.
Be daring
Remedy the winter blues by adding daring colour to your home this winter. “Earthy tones in pink-based greys, red-browns, caramel and cream – paired with brass or gold are trending,” says Krystal. “We are seeing highlight colours in purple and green this year for those more daring and inspired homes.”
Create ambience
Ambient lighting is the key to making a home feel warm this winter, and Krystal recommends soft, textured lighting for a calming vibe. “Textured moody lights that use crackled glass to cast shadows on walls, and fabric-wrapped lights that create ambient rooms, are calming to the nervous system after a long day at work,” says Krystal. “We are a huge advocate for health and wellbeing in our design and we are seeing this come through within the materiality of products.”
Move away from minimal furniture
Furniture that channels Victorian times or woven from cane is having a major moment, says Krystal. “Pick furniture with a Victorian feel, or pair woven cane with oak frames and cream upholstery,” says Krystal. “Textured cream rugs paired with warm lighting have a cosy cave-like den feel.”
Quick decorating tricks from the professionals
Krystal is a professional at decorating homes, and she has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to perfecting that ‘winter’ look.
Tip #1
“Add a chunky throw blanket and this season’s tonal earth-coloured cushions to your couch. These are always an easy way to quickly turn a room into a winter wonderland,” says Krystal. She also recommends pairing whatever colours are in season with a velvet-grey or cream base cushion.
Tip #2
Add warmth with light. “Change the light globes in your floor lamps and ceiling lights from cold white lights to warm yellow lights for a warmer glow,” says Krystal.
Tip #3
Don’t forget the bedroom, says Krystal. “Change your duvet to a feather down quilt that sinks around you at night and invest in a natural linen duvet cover that’s breathable and layer it with cushions and throws in different tones for winter,” says Krystal.
Tip #4
Dot candles that smell delicious around the house – but particularly at the entry to greet you when you come home,” says Krystal.
Tip #5
“If you have a tiled floor or floorboards in your family room, get a rug. It’s not only stylish, but practical because it’ll be warmer underfoot.”
