Winter means colder weather, shorter days and a little less sunshine. It’s also the perfect season to spend more time indoors, snuggled up in bed watching a movie or reading a good book. Unfortunately, cold weather is when the flu starts going around, and it’s important to ensure that you’re getting enough good quality sleep during winter, so your body doesn’t become run down.
So, it’s time to really prepare your bedroom for a snuggly, cosy season of sleep, and we can tell you how to do it.
1. Check your mattress
Considering the average time we spend on earth is 80 years, most people will spend 26 of those years asleep during their lifetime. As such, it’s important that your mattress provides your body with enough support to get a good sleep and wake up feeling fine. Ensure your mattress hasn’t got any permanent indentations, hasn’t gotten too saggy and spring aren’t poking through.
2. Invest in a good pillow
Do you consistently find yourself waking up with a sore neck? Does your current pillow support your neck, head and shoulders effectively when you sleep? Winter is a great time to replace old or lumpy pillows, or to invest in a brand new memory foam pillow.
3. Pick your sheets
You may not think so, but good sheets are essential to a good night’s sleep. You want to look for sheets made from 100 per cent cotton in 500 to 1000 thread count, or linen, bamboo or tencel, or even hybrids of those fabrics. You’ll find that these sheets feel soft and smooth to the touch, keep you warm but never leave you feeling sweaty.
4. Dust off the duvet
If you live in a part of Australia that has particularly hot summers, you may find that you haven’t had a duvet on the bed for a while. If you’re only just brushing the dust off your duvet now, it’s time to check that the filling isn’t lumpy, that the duvet has been professionally cleaned and is in good condition.
5. Finishing touches
Now your bed is made, it’s time to add those cosy finishing touches that will really make the bedroom feel winter-ready. Toss a knitted throw blanket over the foot of the bed, and add a few plush throw pillows to the head. If you have timber, tiled or other hard-flooring, now is a time to add a rug beneath the bed so your toes don’t get too cold when you get up each morning. Don’t forget, fabrics such as wool, velvet and faux fur are the perfect accompaniment to a winter landscape.
