Is there anything a rug can’t do? They protect floorboards, add colour to a dark room and warm up your house. On the flip side, they are magnets for dirt!
There is nothing worse than buying a rug for it to have dirt, food and other household debris embedded in its fibres a week later.
That’s where Melbourne-based brand Hali Rugs comes in. They’ve collaborated with Australian interior stylist Jason Grant on a collection of handmade rugs made from recycled plastic bottles which are reversible and designed for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Some sizes were specifically designed for wet areas in the home like the kitchen and laundry.
But that’s not the best bit! The collection of sustainable rugs can withstand anything life throws at them. When the dirt and grime starts to build up, you can spray it with a high pressure hose and hang it out to dry.
Feels like wool
These gorgeous rugs might be made from plastic bottles but they’ve been melted and spun into a pliable yarn that feels like wool.
“I’ve been going to India since I was ten years old,” said Hali’s Managing Director Dan Swart. “The pollution and the waste that’s happening today is absolutely bewildering. Being able to reuse some of that for a project like this is really powerful.”
The pair spent eighteen months honing and refining the collaboration, while Dan worked closely with one of his suppliers and fabric mills to create a completely new, signature yarn for this project.
Jason Grant said: “We’ve been on the same page from the beginning, and we each brought our own necessary elements to make a collection that’s considered and authentic.”
The collection features a natural palette of greens, blues, greys and soft pinks in a simple flat weave style.
COAST by Hali Rugs & Jason Grant will be available July 1st 2022 at hali.com.au. Prices start at $130.
