Australians love the great outdoors. Summer is a time when many of us indulge in outdoor entertaining, days spent in the garden or by the pool, and beachside holidays. When the mercury drops and the evenings are no longer balmy, most of us pack up and reluctantly prepare to spend the new several months indoors.
However, you can make summer last a little longer by bringing the outdoors in this autumn, by adding some natural touches to your home and interiors
1. Buy some indoor plants
Indoor plants make any space look stylish, are good for the air quality in your home and improve your wellbeing. Look for large foliage plants of different heights and spread them throughout the house to get a forest feel indoors.
2. Embrace natural light
Just because the temperature has dropped doesn’t mean the sun goes away. Make every effort to amplify the amount of natural lighting getting into your home by ensuring windows aren’t obstructed by furniture, be sure to open curtains and blinds each morning and consider hanging a large mirror up on a wall opposite a window to amplify the sunlight and reflect the view from your window.
3. Open up your space
Nothing makes you feel more enclosed indoors than a cramped space. Autumn is the perfect opportunity to reassess the layout of the furniture in your home. Have you got unnecessary furniture taking up floorspace? Is there a way you can arrange a room that makes it feel more open? A room that feels spacious echoes the enormity of the great outdoors.
4. Decorate with natural materials
Revamp your home with some well-placed accessories such as cushions, throws, rugs, ottomans and decorative objects that are made from natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, jute, sisal, wool, leather or timber.
5. Pick the right colour palette
Keep summer living on indoors by selecting light, bright and airy colours that mimic the scenes of summer. Think along the lines of white, yellow, green, light blue and even summery pinks.
6. Bring on the blooms
There’s nothing light a fresh bunch of brightly coloured flowers sitting on the mantelpiece, coffee or dining table to make a room feel summery.
7. Art smart
Art prints are the perfect way to spruce up a room or empty wall on a budget and you can pick up some affordable winners at places such as Kmart, target and Ikea. Look for abstract prints that feature plants or greenery, flowers, and sunset colours such as red, yellow and orange. Or, go for something more literal and look for prints of the beach and other summer scenes.
