The mulch secret that will keep your garden beds thriving

Your garden will be in tip-top shape.

As many gardeners and landscapers know, mulch is important for improving a plant’s health and helping it thrive to its full potential. It also creates an important barrier that keeps in moisture and blocks out pests. But it can be frustrating if it blows away and creates a mess in other parts of your garden. In fact, it’s so frustrating that there’s now a solution you can buy: mulch glue.

But if you haven’t heard about it before, or aren’t sure how it works, here’s what you need to know.

What is mulch glue?

Mulch glue is an adhesive spray designed to hold mulch in place. It provides a secure bond to the ground below so it doesn’t move around.

Applying mulch glue to your garden beds and backyard means no more mess after a windy day and less cleanup required when gardening. As well as using it on mulch, it can be used for small rocks, gravel and pebbles. This means you can use it in many different garden areas, including pathways and high-traffic areas.

How to use it

It is always important to follow the directions of your chosen product, but most glues are applied with a sprayer. It’s typically similar to applying a spray fertiliser.

Before applying, you can mist your garden beds with water to ensure your glue will lock in place. It’s typically as simple as covering your desired area with a thin, even layer.

Is mulch glue safe for my plants and the environment?

Mulch glue is considered safe for most plants and the surrounding environment. The glue itself is not made up of any toxic ingredients, however it should be kept away from any edible plants. We do not recommend using this product for a veggie or herb garden.

How long will mulch glue last?

One application could last around 12 months, however it does depend on the level of harsh weather conditions that your garden is exposed to. Always check the details on your product before applying.

Does mulch glue need to be watered regularly?

Mulch glue itself does not need to be watered to keep its adhesiveness, but don’t forget to water the plants you’ve got within your mulch! When applying the glue, spraying a mist of water on your mulch beforehand can be beneficial to ensure it has stuck properly.

Other ways to keep mulch in place

If you want to weigh up a few options before deciding what to do with your mulch, here are some tips to help keep it tidy.

  • Apply a generous layer of mulch to your garden beds so the weight of it helps keep it in place.
  • Make a border or edge on the garden bed to help secure the mulch.
  • Regularly water your garden beds.
  • Cover the mulched area with natural jute, netting or wire (which can also help keep critters away).
  • Top up mulch when it starts to thin out.
  • Consider a heavier mulch, such as wood chips, if you’re in a very windy area.
