Eating a plant based diet is easy when you know how. First, you gotta avoid meat. that’s fairly obvious. But what’s not so obvious are the additions to regular meals that can turn it from vegan-friendly to a no-go.
Think pizza: Base. Toppings. Cheese. Uh-oh.
If you’re vegan you won’t want to eat dairy and you’ll need to make sure there aren’t any anchovies lurking in the sauce. Finding substitute pizza toppings is vital.
Many restaurants serve cheese-free pizza but what else can you add to make it super tasty?
Let’s take a look.
Cauliflower crust
Pizza bases are often made using flour, water and egg. That immediately rules you out if you’re vegan but cauliflower pizza bases are a great substitute.
Cauliflower pizza crusts are usually made with cauliflower rice, cheese and herbs which makes for a great vegetarian pizza, but isn’t suitable for vegans.
The solution? Sub out the cheese and use flax meal and water with shredded vegan cheese and dried herbs instead. You might need to play around with the cooking times before you get it just right but stick with it because it makes a delicious vegan pizza crust.
Simply top with a rich tomato sauce, fresh basil and cherry tomatoes for a delicious dairy free pizza.
Roasted eggplant pizza
Picasso Kitchen make ready made vegan pizza bases and are available at Woolworths RRP$3.60. So grab yourself a base and get busy making delicious healthy vegan pizzas at home.
Spread the base with a tomato or pesto sauce then add thin slices of raw capsicum. Top with alternate layers of sliced grilled eggplant with grilled zucchini and sprinkle with Sheese Vegan Mozzarella (Woolworths RRP $8.00).
Mushroom and pesto pizza
That may look like cheese but another popular vegan pizza topping is thinly sliced mushrooms. Full of vitamin B, mushrooms add a deep, earthy taste and blend well with all other veg.
Create a gourmet pizza by spreading a thin layer of tomato pasta sauce over the base then place pieces of grilled mushroom topped with dollops of homemade pesto, fresh basil and black olives.
Yum!
Pumpkin pizza
Tired of tomato? Deep dish pizza bases work well with pumpkin puree.
Roast a pumpkin until its soft, then remove the skin and blend until smooth. Spoon a smooth layer over your vegan pizza base then top with roasted broccoli, caramelised onion, chickpeas and fresh herbs for a real treat.
For a vegan pizza to remember, add a squeeze of roasted garlic to the pumpkin puree and I promise you’ll never leave the house for takeaway pizza again.
Takeaway vegan pizza
Speaking of takeaway you can order vegan pizza at both Dominos and Pizza Hut.
Dominos have seven options including Vegan Avocado Veg and you can make your own vegan pizza by subbing out the cheese and adding as many vegetable toppings as you like.
Pizza Hut offer a Vegan Bundle that includes 2 vegan pizzas, vegan sides (potato croquettes, garlic bread) and vegan Cornettos.
NB: Domino’s stores will endeavour to provide vegan pizzas if requested by you, but traces of meat and dairy products may be unintentionally present in food due to cross-contamination during store operations. We cannot guarantee that all vegan pizzas will be 100% free from animal products.
Beetroot and hummus pizza
Last but by no means least, using beetroot dip in place of a tomato-based sauce is a delicious option for a vegan pizza that’s also gluten-free.
Keep it raw by topping with thinly sliced radish, green beans, fresh herbs and drop a dollop of hummus on each slice.
Hummus increases the protein content and if you use beetroot hummus you’ll create a purple pizza that looks as good as it tastes.
