When you pop open a bag of Staburst Chews what’s the first flavour you reach for? Is it the ever-popular pink or do you prefer zesty lemon or tangy orange?

That sweet dilemma is now over for Australians as the Mars-Wrigley Company have confirmed that they have discontinued the Starburst brand in Australia.
Once a lolly bag staple, party necessity and movie night favourite, the absence of the canary yellow packets from supermarket shelves was only noticed in early August.
It all started when Nariman Dein uploaded a video on Tik Tok expressing her frustrations on why she couldn’t find the lollies in Big W and anywhere in Sydney.
Describing her inability to find the Starburst lollies as “a conspiracy theory,” the 40 second video attracted 275k views, 35.7k likes and over a thousand comments.
In response to the popular video, Mars-Wrigley released an official statement confirming the departure was in fact a reality and not a conspiracy.
“Our Starburst products are imported from Europe and like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years,” a spokesperson for the company said. “After reviewing all options, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022.”
The company said it would “prioritise and invest” in the production of locally-made treats like M&Ms, Maltesers, Skittles, Snickers, Extra and Eclipse.
The decision to cease importing Starburst comes after a steady decline in popularity. Woolworths dropped the line from its range in 2015, followed by Coles in 2018.
The decision does not imply that the confectionery will be entirely absent from the Australian market as speciality sweets shops may continue to still stock the products.
