But if you’re looking to supercharge your health kick, or just really want to make sure your getting the most out of the foods that are fueling your body, here are 10 of the best new superfoods to try this year, according to Hemple Nutritionist Liv Kaplan.

1. Dandelion Root

“Dandelion root is fabulous for the liver, and we all know our livers could do with a little extra support during holiday times or after big events such as Christmas and New Year’s.”

2. Beetroot

“You may notice a running theme here with liver health, but beetroots contain something called betaine which encourages the liver to rid the body of toxins. Simply add to fruit and veggie juices, grate raw in salads or consume roasted with olive oil and salt.”

3. Sardines

“One of my favourite superfoods is sardines and I think we could all do with more oily fish in our lives. Sardines are a fabulous, more nutrient-dense alternative to tuna, containing far more essential omega fats which are anti inflammatory and absolutely essential to consume as the body can’t produce them on its own.”

4. Hemp seeds

“This year I’ll be looking to reduce meat consumption and replace it with hemp. Having nearly a complete amino acid profile, almost the closest of any non-animal source, hemp is a perfect dietary addition for anyone looking to improve their diet. If you’ve never tried it, start by adding some hemp seeds on top of your salads, soups or smoothie bowls.”

5. Parsley

“Many underestimate the power of fresh herbs, they are just as super as our dark leafy greens which we hear so much about. They are packed with polyphenols, vitamins and minerals and they also make food taste better.”

6. Lemon

“Lemon is a fantastic addition to your daily diet. Not only does it contain a variety of vitamins and minerals but it also aids in digestion, and it is believed in many traditional medicine practices to be a natural detoxifier. This year I’ll be looking to consume more fresh lemon in place of vinegars in salad dressings.”

7. Hemp oil

“Hemp seed oil is super concentrated in all the goodness of hemp. It is very high in omega 3 fats which are naturally anti-inflammatory and boost brain health.Hemp also contains a rare anti-inflammatory omega 6 called GLA, and most of us should always be working to reduce inflammation in the body as it’s linked to all states of disease. Add it to food just as you would olive oil.”

8. Avocado

“I love the array of plant based fats in avocado that help keep our triglycerides in a healthy range. The majority of fat in avocados is oleic acid, which is also found in high amounts in olive oil.”

9. Red cabbage

“Cabbage is part of the brassica family of vegetables along with broccoli, cauliflower and bok choy. Cabbage is often overlooked as a healthy diet staple but when you see the colour of red cabbage, how can it not be healthy? Colourful veggies mostly means they are packed with antioxidants which have been shown to help reduce inflammation in the body.”

10. Matcha

“I’m looking to reduce my reliance on coffee, and while not going completely cold turkey, I think it’s a great idea to crowd out the coffee by having other good options around. Matcha is made from ground up green tea leaves which means it has high levels of ntioxidants. Matcha also contains something called L-theanine, which counteracts some of the stimulating effects of caffeine. It is said to promote relaxation but without drowsiness.”
