Pink KitKats exist

Pink really is the colour of the year. With pink gin, pink prosecco cheese, and even pink lettuce, it comes as no surprise that now even chocolate is getting a pink makeover – and it’s all natural.

Next week, UK consumers will be the first to try KitKats made with ‘ruby chocolate’ from selected cocoa beans. This ‘naturally coloured’ chocolate uses ruby cocoa beans grown in the Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Brazil.

This isn’t the first time KitKat has experimented with chocolate flavours – in Japan, you can find chocolate flavours such as sake, cherry blossom and even cough drop.

Ruby chocolate has been attracting great interest from chocoholics since being revealed in September last year. According to some claims, it is the first new natural colour for chocolate since Nestle unveiled white chocolate over 80 years ago.

The Swiss Chocolatier Barry Callebaut spent more than ten years experimenting with the colours and flavours of these beans. They describe the flavour as ‘a tension between berry-fruitiness and luscious smoothness’. It is not as sweet as milk chocolate, with a lighter flavour.
