Air fryers have been all the rage for quite some time, with manufacturers continually introducing newer and improved models. But can you grill in an air fryer? And if so, do you need to preheat it first?

With all the new air fryer features hitting the market, we asked Food Editor Sarah Murphy which one she thought was a real game-changer. After trying the Jamie Oliver by Tefal Quiet & Easy Air Fryer EY55JD, Sarah was especially impressed with the die-cast grill plate, designed to lightly sear meat, fish, or veggies with ease, without having to fire up the BBQ.

“The die-cast grill grid is a great option if you often use a chargrill pan on your stovetop; you can get those lovely grill marks with no fuss,” says Sarah.

“It’s, of course, not the same as an outdoor barbecue, but it’s a really clever addition to an air fryer if you’re looking for something different.”

What does it mean to grill in an air fryer?

Grilling in an air fryer uses hot air circulation at high temperatures to mimic the browning and crisping effect of a traditional grill. Unlike a BBQ, it doesn’t use open flame or direct heat from below, but it can still create seared edges and caramelised surfaces on your food.

Some air fryers (like the Ninja Foodi or Philips XXL) come with a grill plate, helping replicate grill marks and even browning. These devices are ideal for indoor grilling, eliminating smoke and flare-ups.

Is it actually grilling?

Technically, no, but functionally, it’s close. Traditional grilling relies on direct radiant heat, often from charcoal or gas. Air fryers use convection heat (hot air blown rapidly around the food) to create a similar result.

The benefit? You get grilled-style results quickly and easily without needing an outdoor setup, and with minimal cleanup.

How to grill in an air fryer: step-by-step

Step 1: Preheat your air fryer

Use the grill or air fry setting and preheat to 200°C (400°F) for best searing. Some units preheat automatically, but manual preheat ensures even cooking.

Step 2: Prep the food

Pat meat or vegetables dry for better browning. Lightly brush with oil and season with salt, pepper, and herbs/spices.

Step 3: Use a grill plate or basket

Grill plates allow better air flow and grill marks. Don’t overcrowd the basket — this reduces crispiness.

Step 4: Monitor cooking times

  • Grilled cheese: 5–7 mins
  • Chicken thighs: 15–20 mins
  • Fish fillet: 8–10 mins
  • Veggies: 10–14 mins

Step 5: Check doneness and flip if needed

Use a thermometer for meats (75°C internal for chicken). Flip halfway through for even searing.

Step 6: Rest your food

Let meats rest for a few minutes to retain juices.

Tips for better results when grilling in your air fryer

Want that BBQ-style finish without stepping outside? These simple tips help bring that grilled goodness to your air fryer meals:

1. Crank the heat

Grilling needs intensity. Set your air fryer to 190°C–200°C to mimic the high, dry heat of a barbecue. Lower temps = baked, not grilled.

2. Don’t skip the seasoning

A sprinkle of smoky spices like paprika, cumin, garlic powder or even a BBQ rub adds depth and that telltale “grilled” flavour — no smoke required.

3. Fake the flame

Want that caramelised, just-charred look? Brush on a little BBQ sauce in the final minutes, or give meat a quick pan-sear or blowtorch touch at the end.

Limitations of air fryer grilling

Air fryer grilling can be a game-changer, but it’s not perfect. Here’s what it can’t do (yet):

1. No real smoke

You won’t get that smoky, flame-kissed flavour unless you add it yourself. Try a pinch of smoked paprika or a drop of liquid smoke.

3. Easy to overcook

Air fryers cook fast, which means chicken breasts, burgers, and steaks can dry out quickly.

4. Size matters

Don’t expect to slow-cook ribs, brisket or a whole roast. Air fryers are best for small, quick-cook recipes like kebabs, chops, halloumi, and veg.
