ALDI’s $8.99 spanakopita keeps selling out – but another supermarket has more cheese

A must-have freezer staple.

There’s a frozen dinner at ALDI that people are snapping up by the armful, swapping sauce ideas, and even worrying that if they talk about it too much, it’ll disappear from the shelves.

In fact, photos showing the empty freezer section where ALDI Australia’s $8.49 Urban Eats Greek Spinach & Cheese Spanakopita should be are frequently posted online. But how do the ingredients stack up against Coles and Woolworths frozen spanakopitas?

Why people are loving Aldi’s version

The online response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people saying it’s their go-to Aldi dish when they can’t be bothered to cook.

“Looks amazing – enjoy it in good health,” wrote one commenter, while another simply said: “They are very tasty.”

One parent noted it’s great for her fussy kid, “A favourite in our home. Even the kid who doesn’t eat green food loves this.”

And another admitted, “I usually eat a whole one all to myself.”

How does the Aldi version compare to Coles and Woolworths?

All three supermarket spanakopitas use both mizithra and feta — so the real question is value per dollar. Coles actually edges ahead on mizithra content at 14% versus ALDI’s 7%, with both landing at 2% feta. But Coles charges roughly $1 more for it.

For Aldi, it’s about delivering genuinely good spanakopita at a price that makes buying two feel completely reasonable.

The Urban Eats spanakopita has been crowned winner of ALDI’s shopper-voted People’s Picks award three times running.

How it compares to the alternatives

For anyone who has stood in a supermarket frozen food aisle, genuinely unsure which spanakopita to grab:

How to cook it: the flip method that changes everything

Before grabbing your own frozen Spanikopita, there’s a trick to cooking it just right.

A Reddit poster says they cracked the code for taking Aldi’s Urban Eats spanakopita from good to genuinely great.

Their method: spray with oil, scatter sesame seeds on top, and cook for 20 minutes. Then place a pizza tray over the top, flip the whole thing, and cook for a further 8 minutes on the other side.

“Trust me, having the underneath just a lil bit crispy did make such a difference,” they shared.

Once you’ve got the cooking method sorted, the hard part is choosing which condiment to serve it with.

The dipping sauce debate has no wrong answer

While the good people of Reddit can all agree on the tastiness of this dish, deciding on the best condiment wasn’t as simple.

The tzatziki traditionalists argue that the cool, garlicky yoghurt cuts through the richness of the filo and feta.

The green goddess fans want something with more of a herby punch

Then there are the ALDI garlic dip loyalists, who say grabbing your dip from the same place as your pie is either lazy genius or just plain genius.

The lemon purists say all you need is a squeeze of fresh lemon over your slice.

And yes, some prefer to top the spanakopita with a drizzle of honey.

As for sides, rocket, sliced cucumber, and cherry tomatoes seem to be the go-to.
