Christmas table decorations that will impress your guests

While the Christmas tree tends to take pride of place in the home, and is at the forefront of your mind when it comes to decorations, there’s another part of your home that’s worth dressing up in seasonal fare: your dining table.

And, just like your Christmas tree, there are myriad colour palettes and festive themes to decorate your Christmas table.

Here, we've gathered our favourite 12 Christmas table themes to inspire you.

1. A traditional Aussie Christmas

Take the traditional colours of Christmas but give them a jolly Australian spin, using red waratahs as your floral centrepiece. Create a warm and rich tablescape with red linen napkins and red crackers.

2. Winter wonderland

Create a snowy landscape on your Christmas table using snow flocked faux foliage combined with touches of silver and gold. Place a sprig of white berries on each place setting and dot the table with tea lights and white star decorations.

3. Classic woodland

Create a cosy woodland setting by layering natural woven placements on a tartan tablecloth. Use pine cones, evergreens and berries for the table runner, and scatter with glittering gold baubles for a hint of glamour.

4. Merry and bright

Use pops or pink, yellow and blue for a vibrant Christmas dining table. Use a colourful floral table runner on top of a white tablecloth, and layer with round yellow placements. Wrap small presents for your guests in co-ordinating hues.

5. Red and white

A red and white colour scheme sets a cheery scene at this table. But rather than decorate with candy canes, keep things sophisticated with a shiny red apple as the place setting. Just write each person's name on a leaf-shaped card and tie to the stalk.

6. Coastal charm

Create a relaxed coastal setting by using lots of different layers and textures in a palette inspired by nature. Start with white linen placemats and layer with a woven oval placement for contrast and texture. Give your guests something to take home with a tiny potted succulent at each place setting.

7. Golden glow

Keep things simple with layers of white linen and adorn your table with strings of gold and white paper lights and a star garland. Combine with golden platters, bowls and champagne flutes.

8. Tropical cheer

Use a bright colour palette of pink, peach, teal and yellow and combine with gold and copper elements for a touch of gleam. Use single stem tropical leaves to create a striking table runner, and dot with pineapples down the middle. Scatter with shiny ornaments for a festive touch.

9. Simple and sophisticated

Keep things pared back for Christmas day with plain white linen and use a single sprig of silver dollar eucalyptus for each place setting. Combine with a palette of green and navy blue for subtle sophistication.

10. A Bush Christmas

Use the colours of Christmas to anchor this relaxed table setting, layering a white linen tablecloth with red napery. Drape a garland of gum leaves down the centre of the table, and scatter with walnuts and gum blossoms.

11. Beach Christmas

Incorporate beachy textures using shells, rope, driftwood and star fish combined with more traditional Christmas decorations in a palette of silver, blue and white. Add netted blue glass buoys for coastal charm.

12. Rustic elegance

Bring the outdoors in with this farm-fresh look. Use any greenery from your garden as the centrepiece, and dot with pine cones for a country look. Go for table linen in natural woven fabrics, and add a sprig of greenery to each place setting. Complete the look with shiny red baubles.
