5 things to do this winter in Tasmania

There's so much going on here! - by Tori Ottley

Tasmania is known for its natural landscapes, fine food and quality breweries. However, because this Australian state is located down south, it may not be on your radar for winter travel but it should be.

There are so many diverse activities, events and experiences going on during the cooler months. And here are our top five…

Indulge at the Chocolate Winterfest

Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe

Hot chocolate is one of the best ways to warm up in winter, so make sure you go to the Chocolate Winterfest.

It’s taking place in Latrobe on August 13, and is offering festival-goers plenty of samples to enjoy, as well as chocolate-making workshops and artists that will be showcasing chocolate inspired costumes.

Be entertained at the Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival

Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival

The Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival celebrates all things food, drink, music and entertainment and it’s taking place on July 14 – 16 at the Huon Valley.

You’ll experience the sweet sounds of folk, funk and space jazz.

There’s also going to be delicious food available from pizzas, to burgers, paella and doughnuts – all from local producers. And on top of this, the region is known for its apple picking history, so the cider onsite will be quality.

Hike the Three Capes Track

...

Although hiking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re planning a winter holiday, this will change that.

Suitable for beginners, the stunning 46-kilometre coastal walk takes you along an amazing three night, four-day journey across a breathtaking, rugged landscape.

With international award winning designed huts that include comforts such as cooking facilities, mattresses and heaters in the communal cabins. Preparing your evening meal, meeting new friends and retiring at the end of the day for a well deserved rest is made easy.

Winter is an exciting time of year to be out amongst Australia’s highest sea cliffs. Expect atmospheric skies, bracing winds, cold nights, and often south-westerly winds and perhaps some rain (you may even be treated to an amazing aurora!).

Hiking in the cooler months is also beneficial to your health. "Cold air can clear your mind and reduce stress, which can be helpful for weight loss," Alan Mikesky, PhD, director of the human performance and biomechanics laboratory at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, told Prevention.

Face your fears at the Post Arthur Ghost Tour

Tasmania was such an awesome holiday. One day I'll return with a 4wd & camper trailer to explore more. #portarthur #ghosttour #churchruins #exploretasmania #tasmania #oldbuilding #history

Test your limits and do a spine chilling ghost tour of the UNESCO-listed convict site, Port Arthur.

The 90-minute guided tour will be accompanied with creepy tales of paranormal activity that date back to 1870 here.

The chilly winter weather adds to the lantern lit, eerie atmosphere.

Take a scenic flight over the wilderness

Witness Tasmania’s natural beauty from above and do a scenic flight around the World Heritage Wilderness Area.

You’ll fly high over the Southwest National Park, a 6182.67-square-kilometre area, that thrives in nature and has no roads, or people living, just the untouched wild. You’ll also get to see places like Melaleuca and the Gordon River, so don’t forget your camera.
