“Using a portable BBQ provides significant advantages over their contemporary at-home, larger units,” says Russell Crosdale, in-house barbeque expert at Appliances Online.

“Firstly, the convenience of taking with you – be it to the beach, on holidays, a weekend away, the local field, or just from one side of the house to the other. The other main benefit is size. While significantly smaller than other types of units, the portable nature of them allows them to fit perfectly on balconies or smaller areas where a BBQ is needed but space is limited.”

To assist in selecting the portable BBQ that suits your lifestyle, we have carefully curated a list of 10 highly rated models currently available in Australia. These options cater to a range of budgets, ensuring that whether you’re looking for a cost-effective choice or ready to splurge, there’s something for everyone. What features are important to look out for in a portable BBQ?

When shopping for the best portable BBQ for you, Russell says it is important to consider how and where you plan on using it. “Portable BBQs come in a variety of fuel sources – charcoal, log, natural gas, and even refillable butane gas cans – so making sure you know how and where you will use the BBQ is integral.”

If you’re a beginner griller, don’t let different types of fuel types intimidate you. According to Russell, “the best grill for a beginner will always be an LPG (Liquid Propane Gas) BBQ. These grills are easy to use, easy to maintain when not in use, and whilst cooking have the best control over heat. A simple turn of the knob allows for hotter or cooler cooking temperatures and its not susceptible to the elements like a charcoal BBQ.”

“Another thing to look at and consider is the available accessories for each grill. Both the Napoleon and the Weber offer a large selection of add-on cooking accessories to enhance your BBQ experience while a few of the smaller brands do not.”

Is a portable BBQ worth it?

A portable BBQ can be a great investment depending on your lifestyle and how often you choose to cook outdoors. In recent years, portable BBQs have become incredibly versatile and offer many different features.

“The most recent trend we are seeing in Australian BBQ consumers is the ability to use your BBQ differently. “From smoking to pizza cooking, desserts, hot and fast grilling, or low and slow roasting the BBQ is no longer just for chops and sausages,” says Russell. “When looking for a BBQ, consider the types of foods you will be cooking and how confident you are with different fuel sources.”

The price range of a portable BBQ varies, so it’s important to think about whether it is something you’ll use a lot to really get value from it. The great thing about investing in a portable BBQ is that you can enjoy it in many different ways: from outdoor camping, picnics and the beach to hosting in your backyard. If you don’t barbeque often, investing in a portable option may be a more economical option rather than a full-sized grill.
