Gone are the days of Lassie, Fido and Spot but that doesn’t mean traditional names completely disappeared. Luna, which is a little more unique, has taken out the top spot. However, it’s followed closely behind by the more traditional Daisy and Milo.

A trend the lists have highlighted is people have a tendency to lean towards more human names like Luna, Ruby and Frankie for their dogs. This is likely a reflection of how more and more people have a greater attachment to their pets these days as a member of the family instead of ‘just a pet’. More ‘dog-like’ names are on the decline, being half as popular as they were in the early 2000s.

10 most popular unique dog names

A trend we’re seeing on this year’s list of more unusual dog names is people naming their pups after popular designer brands or movie and TV characters with names like Gucci, PEPE and Yoda.

Showing the strong influence Bluey has had on our culture – and possibly the strong influence that children have on the naming of household pets – is the emergence of the name Chilli (Bluey’s mum for the uninitiated) into the top 10 unique names.

The top 10 unique names rising in popularity, include:

So if you are searching for a new name, these lists show us that the sky’s the limit when it comes to naming your new furry friend. Whether you want to go with a traditional ‘dog’ name or a more human name there really are no rules.

Though a good rule of thumb when naming a pet is to think about how you’d feel shouting it out repeatedly when trying to get them to a-bring back the ball at the dog park.
