A suspected Listeria outbreak has IGA Campbells and Independent Grocers across New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania recalling all bags of Black and Gold’s 1kg Mixed Vegetables. Any consumer who has bought these is urged to either discard them immediately or return them to the supermarket where they bought them.
Listeria is found widely in soil, water and vegetation, and can be carried by animals. A vegetable or fruit food product can become contaminated anywhere along the chain of food production. Listeriosis is caused by eating contaminated food. It’s an uncommon illness can be fatal if it causes septicaemia (blood poisoning) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain). Listeria may cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and people with low immune systems.
The New South Wales Food Authority issued an official warning on their website on August 1, and comes weeks after a similar Listeria-related recall of frozen vegetables sold in Aldi, Woolworths and IGA stores.
