With summer just around the corner it’s time to consider your gameplan for staying cool over the warmer months.

For those without air-conditioning, Dyson’s legendary fans would be considered the best option for tackling the heat – although the fans come with a hefty price tag of up to $799.

However, according to consumer watchdog Choice, an $89 fan from Kmart performs better than an expensive Dyson fan.

Choice put Dyson’s line-up of high-tech expensive fans to the test, comparing them to basic, traditional pedestal fans.

“Although the Dyson models don’t perform badly in our tests overall, when it comes to the strength of airflow and their ability to create a nice cooling breeze, you can buy a product that does the job for less than a tenth of the price,” says Choice’s home expert Rebecca Ciaramidaro.

“Although these fans perform adequately in our tests, we find that if you’re just looking for something to circulate air and create a cooling breeze, the Dyson fans aren’t worth the extra cash,” she added.

“You’re paying a significantly higher price for the design and technology of the added features which you may or may not need.”

Choice’s tests revealed that Kmart’s $89 Anko 40cm Wi-Fi Pedestal Fan outperformed the Dyson Cool Tower Fan when it comes to the scores for airflow and noise.

“There’s nothing in particular wrong with the Dyson Cool Tower Fan, and it admittedly comes with added features you don’t get with the cheaper models, such as a timer and remote control,” says Choice’s expert fan tester, Matthew Tung. “But, it’s more than six times the price for something that essentially does the same job.”
