How to get chocolate stains out of clothes
The sooner you notice chocolate stains on your clothes, the better. Here are Nicole’s steps for cleaning chocolate from clothes.
- Scrape any excess chocolate from the fabric’s surface using a blunt knife or fingernail. Be careful not to spread the stain further.
- Rinse the stained area from the back with cold running water, rubbing the fabric together to remove as much chocolate as possible.
- Apply Nicole’s DIY stain remover spray. (Recipe here.)
- Let the stain remover sit on the stain for about 5 minutes.
- Wash the garment in the washing machine, following the instructions on the care label.
- Check the stain after washing, but do not dry the garment or allow it to be set if it’s still visible.
If the stain remains, repeat the pre-treatment and washing process until the stain is completely removed.
How to get hot chocolate stains out of upholstery
Removing chocolate stains from upholstery is similar to removing stains from clothes. The only problem is that you can only rinse the stain from behind if your couch has removable covers.
- Remove excess chocolate from the couch’s surface using a blunt knife or fingernail. Be careful not to spread the stain further.
- Make up a batch of Nicole’s DIY stain remover. (Recipe here.)
- Test the stain remover on a small, inconspicuous couch area to ensure it doesn’t damage or discolour the fabric.
- Spray a small amount of the stain remover onto the chocolate stain and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
- Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth to gently blot the stain, working from the outside edges toward the centre. Be careful not to rub or scrub the stain, as this can push it deeper into the fabric.
- Rinse the cloth with clean water and continue blotting the stain until it is removed.
- Once the stain is removed, rinse the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining cleaning solution.
- Blot the area dry with a clean towel and let it air dry completely.
