A new study has discovered that women have more effective immune responses against viruses and bacteria than men do, which means woman are able to battle some diseases better than their male counterparts.
According to the research women get more autoimmune diseases, allergies and migraines than men due to a type of white blood cell which is part of the immune system, called a mast cell.
Mast cells in females make and store more inflammatory substances, such as histamine and serotonin, than men, and they can cause congestion, headaches, abdominal pain, digestive issues and shortness of breath – which sucks.
However, it is these very mast cells that make and store inflammatory substances that give the female immune system an edge: female mast cells can produce more potent immune reactions to viruses and bacteria because of those cells. In fact, the study found that more than 4,000 genes were more active in female mast cells compared with those from males. While the precise reason why females mount a greater immune response is not fully understood, mast cells are likely an important factor.
The immune system is also important for regulating the growth of cancer cells, which may be why men suffer from higher rates of cancer than women.
There you have it ladies – your immune system is far superior.
