5 different ways to keep your décolletage smooth

It's easy when you know how.

You’ve spent years moisturising your face and maybe your neck, but once you hit your 40s it’s often the décolletage [pron: day-coll-et-azhe] that suddenly attracts your attention.

Sun exposure is the main culprit of skin damage and because the skin on the neck and chest is more delicate, the damage can really show.

Fortunately, there are many products that can come to the rescue. But if you really want to smooth out those lines, lasers are your best friend.

1. Protect yourself from the sun

Gina Cook, National Training Manager for Ella Baché says this, “The skin on your décolletage is very thin and often receives the most incidental sun exposure so it tends to be the first place the visible signs of ageing start to show however it’s often neglected in skincare routines.”

She adds; “When applying products to your neck, make sure to swipe product up rather than down and apply moisturisers and serums in circular motions on your décolletage.”

2. Moisturise!

Ella Baché’s special formulated Firming Neck Cream is specifically designed for the neck and décolleté.

“It works to improve your skin’s firmness and smooths the texture while moisturising and reducing the appearance of brown age spots,” says Cook.

3. Try silicon sheets

Silicon sheets are gel sheets usually used for scarring, but they’re also great for hydrating your décolletage. “They are genius for sleep lines,” says Dr Phoebe Jones from Concept Cosmetic Medicine.

“Despite them not been the most attractive thing to wear to bed they certainly work their magic. Personally, I like the ones for the décolletage, forehead and eye areas. If you don’t want to use them all the time, you can just use them in the week leading up to an event and they will give a softening effect to fine lines.”

4. Use a Jade Roller

While Jade Rollers might seem gimmicky, they are actually a brilliant way to smooth out wrinkles on your décolletage.

Lux Aestiva Founder Katie Blyth advises how to get the best from them: “Start out by cleansing then apply a small amount of serum or oil to your skin. Slowly roll the Jade Roller in an upward motion, ensuring not to be too aggressive in your movement.”

“It is best used slowly, taking the time to rub away any tension and stress and allowing the jade to cool the skin. Apply gentle pressure while rolling the jade over your skin which will assist in sweeping away toxins and balancing excess fluid.”

5. Lasers

Sleeping on your side is one of the main culprits for deep wrinkles on the décolletage. “If you are looking to improve the state of lines that have formed from years spent sleeping on your side then laser therapy or injectables are the most effective methods,” says Jones.

“Both fraxel and other CO2 lasers can be good to help rid yourself of lines and improve the general skin quality by boosting collagen production while hyaluronic acid injectables also revolutionise specific areas.”

Natalie Abouchar, founder of Privee Clinic in Bondi Junction uses the RF Resurfacing treatment to improve sun damage, discolouration and vertical lines on the décolletage.

For best results you’ll need a series of treatments and your skin may be a bit red post-treatment. “Afterwards your skin will appear red and somewhat inflamed, much like a mild sunburn but this is simply a natural reaction, vital to the process of skin repair,” says Abouchar.

“This inflammation causes the release of healing agents such as growth factors to the site, which ultimately boost your skin’s natural regeneration process.”
